There are two books I’ve recommended more than any others in my entire life.

One is called Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Kristin Neff. It is an excellent, all purpose life read (and re-read).

The other is called Refuse to Choose!: Use All of Your Interests, Passions, and Hobbies to Create the Life and Career of Your Dreams by Barbara Sher.

If you’ve been following along for a little while, you can probably guess why I love that second book so much.

First off, the exclamation point. It’s very on brand for me.

Barbara Sher talks a lot about the everything people among us. Those of us who love to experience things before we know if it’s the right path for us. Who collect knowledge and part-time gigs like it’s, well... a career.

But it’s way more than just talking about these ideas. There's really great guided exercises that help you actually figure out how to put all the pieces together.

When we’re ‘everything people’ it can be really hard for us to see how the disparate parts come together.

A huge part of my work is helping brilliant people figure out how to tell their story in a cohesive way. My first profound experience being able to do that for myself came out of this book, and an activity where you list ‘everything you’ve ever done’.

What started off in a way that felt silly actually kind of broke my brain in the best way possible. It allowed me to see connections and throughlines in my work and life in a way I never had before.

It was amazing - it’s a highly recommend from me on this book.

Especially for anyone who feels kind of stuck in that swirly-too-muchness phase of their career or life.

Because I promise. You are not too much.

And this book is the ultimate hype up and help in figuring out how to direct all that energy.
